7 Step guide to your first Yoga Class!
Have you ever done yoga before in a yoga studio?
If not, this blog post is going be your co-teacher all along the way!
As you already know, everything in this world must cross it’s first time!
And as the quotation goes, I bet that every Yogi in this world had to face the first Yoga class! So let us face it too!
But how? What should we do in it or before it? I will tell you the hows and whats of facing your first yoga class in 7 simple steps.
And before we talk, congratulations on showing some commitment to seek better health, fitness and balance of mind and body! It takes courage to try something new and commit to do something, and you should be proud of yourself for stepping outside of your comfort zone.
So, stop being nervous and follow this step by step guide about what to expect from your first Yoga class, and what do you need to know before stepping into the Yoga studio!
1. First things first:
Before even you start off to think about anything, believe in your Yoga teacher and in your decision!
Firstly, have belief in your Yoga teacher as he/she is committed to give you what you are looking for in life.
Secondly, believe in your decision of choosing the studio over others and investing into your own/partners/relatives/friend’s holistic health which is one of the most important parts of human life.
A belief is a strong feeling which can bring about transformation to anything you believe in. Have it alongside your physical commitment and hard work to achieve what you want to.
You don’t need to prepare anything but your mind, before you start doing yoga! 🙂
2. What to wear for Yoga? – Yoga Wear
Not necessarily trendy yoga wear! If you already have it, that’s great 🙂
Let us get back to basics. Anything you do need few little prerequisites and clothing is one of them. You need not worry to have the latest, high-end Yoga brands to fit in and rather focus on comfortable clothing which allows you to perform any sort of physical activity with ease and just make sure they’re flexible, light, and breathable.
As Yoga is practiced in bare feet, you also need not worry about the kind of shoes and socks to wear for Yoga! Try to have as minimal jewelry as possible on you and any additional palm and feet grips are completely optional.
3. What all to bring to the Yoga class? – Yoga Gear
Perhaps the only thing which Yoga would request its practitioners is a Yoga Mat, to have a firm grip while doing some asanas apart from the basic comfortable clothing which we already talked about. There is no need to worry about this as the studio provides good quality mats to all the members for the class. But having a personal mat is always recommended only if you want to invest in one because as you develop your practice, your personal mat becomes a sort-of extension of yourself.
A mat towel and water bottle are the other items you are encouraged to bring. Towels are to wipe the sweat and enable you to have a firm grip on the mat. Make sure it is light and more absorbent. Water bottle is to hydrate yourselves in midst of the class and to feel internally comfortable.
Other Yoga gear would include props, bricks, blocks, eye pillows, boulders or any other supportive cushions which are provided by the studio itself. So you need not worry!
4. What to eat and drink before the class?
Staying hydrated and energetic is the key take away. Have a light snack and a glass of water at least 30 mins before the class. Avoid taking food which is heavy or high on carbs. This will prevent you from feeling faint, and help your body keep up with the physical demands of your practice.
5. Reach your class before time
Reaching the studio at least 5 to 10 mins before the class is very crucial as you need to freshen up a bit and arrange some stuff for yourself in the Yoga class room like:
- Selecting a mat from the lot – though all of them are alike colors may vary!
- Spotting a space in the studio hall – As a beginner you need to choose a spot to roll your mat so that you can concentrate on the class as much as can. Don’t be hesitant to take the front and center spots!
Sneaking in late into your first class would be a very bad thing to do to yourselves 😛
6. What to do inside the class?
Once you are in the class try to follow the teacher’s instructions word to word as much as you can. The teacher explicitly explains how should you get into a posture and would try to correct you. The teacher also might show how to do the posture and you can visually replicate what was demonstrated. It may happen that you may hear few words through your practice that you might not understand. Don’t worry too much about it and focus on what you can. And if you are a perfectionist or a wanna be perfectionist, please don’t try being one while starting with your postures!
Everyone has their own journey in Yoga and it is completely cool to be as comfortable as you can while doing yoga. No one is going to judge you and that’s the coolest part. If you don’t feel comfortable in a pose, simply go back to any resting pose or any comfortable posture. When you’re ready to continue, jump back in with the rest of the class.
So, don’t try to be the T-Rex like this 😀
Talking in the studio, usage of cellphone is a big no-no. Try to be as calm and peaceful you can be and yoga can do wonders to you. Be happy that you are at the right place where ever you are and give everything you have, to make it happen. Also, do keep in mind that you might be disturbing others along with disturbing yourselves!
So, KEEP CALM and Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! 🙂
7. What to do after the class?
Generally, yoga classes end with a good relaxation and rejuvenation of the body and you would feel wonderful after it. In case after the class, there is a catch or a mild sprain, you can seek advice from the teacher and please keep it in mind that there is nothing to panic about. Also, try not have too much water after the class and few sips of water should be fine. Try not consume heavy diet right after the class and give at least a 15 to 30 mins gap before you consume something.
Finally, keep up your excitement till your next class as you are gonna fall in love with Yoga soon!
